Getting Your Body Back: Breast Lift after Pregnancy

33477718-xsAfter a woman gives birth, her body experiences many changes. Childbirth poses a significant amount of stress on the female body. Skin begins to droop and the breasts begin to sag. Some women see a real difference in their breasts after pregnancy. They become less perky and full, leaving many women with a lack of self-confidence. Breastfeeding also changes the appearance of the breasts.

Many women believe that exercising and building muscle will help bring back the perkiness of the breasts and eliminate drooping skin. However, that is not the case, as loose skin does not respond to diet and exercise. In fact, visiting a cosmetic surgeon is the best option to remedy the situation. New mothers can get breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, to rejuvenate their bodies and restore youthfulness of their figure.

Dr. Darrell Perkins in Sydney is one of the leading plastic surgeons for post-pregnancy mastopexy surgery.

Good Candidates for Breast Lift Surgery

The ideal candidates for mastopexy, or breast lift surgery, are women who want to change the appearance of drooping, sagging breasts. Candidates must be in good health, free from any pre-existing health issues or diseases that could complicate cosmetic surgery.

What Is the Procedure Like?

At Dr. Perkins’ practice, skin and glandular tissue is tightened and removes to give a fuller appearance to breasts. Unlike other procedures, the surgeon does not remove any volume from the breasts.

The technique depends on the size and shape of the breast, the position of the areolas, the degree of breast sagging, and the elasticity of the surrounding skin. Some women with mild or moderate droopiness may only need implants instead of a full breast lift. All patients are different, and Dr. Perkins can assist women in deciding which approach is best for them. Depending on the patient, breast implants may be added to boost fullness and make breasts perkier.

The Breast Lift Process

First, the plastic surgeon will administer anesthesia to ensure the patients comfort throughout the surgery. Then, the surgeon will make one of three types of incisions near the areola, depending on the condition of the patient’s breasts.

  • Around the areola
  • Around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease
  • Around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and then horizontally around the breast crease

From there, the surgeon will begin to reshape the breasts to increase firmness and perkiness. The nipple and areola will be repositioned and excess skin removed. If the areola is larger than normal, the surgeon may reduce its size before reattaching it to the breast. After that, the remaining skin is tightened and the incisions are closed.

Results

Results from breast lift surgery can be seen almost immediately. While the area may swell and bruise, patients can typically see a difference directly after the surgery. Over time, scars will fade and the breasts will look more youthful and firm.
