Mini vs. Traditional vs. Extended Tummy Tuck

35640619-xsAt the practice of cosmetic surgeon Darrell Perkins, F.R.A.C.S., patients can expect that their procedures will be customized down to the finest detail and that their needs and goals will be taken into full account at every stage of their treatment. Among those procedures that can be most precisely personalised to each unique patient is abdominoplasty, popularly known as “tummy tuck” surgery. Tummy tuck is one of the most effective and transformative of all body contouring procedures; when performed by a plastic surgeon of Dr. Perkins’ skill and experience, it is an extremely safe and natural-looking method of improving the appearance of the abdominal region.

Depending on your individual needs and goals, you can undergo one of three basic types of tummy tuck procedures at our plastic surgery practice in Sydney: mini tummy tuck, traditional tummy tuck, and extended tummy tuck. Which variation on tummy tuck surgery would be best suited to your body? The best way to find out is to meet with Dr. Perkins in a confidential, one-on-one consultation at his office. Mini Tummy Tuck

For patients who require only a subtle recontouring of their abdomens, mini tummy tuck may be the best possible solution. In mini tummy tuck surgery, an incision is made in the lower abdomen; however, it does not extend from hip to hip, as it would in the case of a full tummy tuck. Likewise, the ends of the incision do not rise to the level of the belly button. As a result, only the area below the belly button is treated in mini tummy tuck surgery. Excess fat is removed from the area, the underlying musculature is tightened, and the skin is pulled taut, with any excess skin excised. The results are subtle and natural looking.

Traditional Tummy Tuck

Traditional tummy tuck surgery is the most suitable option for patients who want to rid themselves of “paunches” such as those that form after pregnancy or through the cycle of recurring weight gain and weight loss. Unlike mini tummy tuck surgery, traditional tummy tuck surgery accounts for the entire abdominal area, from the lower ribs to the pubis. This allows for more comprehensive removal of fat, tightening of the muscles, and stretching of the skin. In most cases, the navel must be repositioned to ensure the most natural-looking results possible.

Extended Tummy Tuck

As its name suggests, extended tummy tuck accounts for a larger area than traditional tummy tuck. In an extended tummy tuck, the incision extends to the back of the hips so that fat can be removed and skin and muscle can be tightened in the flanks, the upper hips, and the lower back. The result is a full toned mid-section.

Many of our patients elect to combine tummy tuck surgery with arm lift, thigh lift, or buttock lift to achieve the sleek, well-defined body contours they desire.
