Facelift- Frequently Asked Questions

At the plastic surgery practice of Dr. Darrell Perkins, we are committed to helping patients look and feel naturally beautiful. Facelift surgery is an exceptional rejuvenation procedure that allows patients to subtract years from the way they look. But performing the procedure involves making a number of choices, which is why Dr. Perkins believes that patient knowledge is important to obtaining the most successful surgical results. Below are answers to some commonly asked questions regarding facelift surgery at our Sydney practice, which also serves patients from Sutherland Shire, Wollongong, and other New South Wales locations. If you have additional questions or concerns that are not answered below, please do not hesitate to contact our practice. Our knowledgeable staff members are more than willing to answer all of your questions.

How long does it take to recover from facelift surgery?

Recovery from a facelift is usually quite quick in the sense of returning to good health. However, it may take two to three weeks for all bruising and swelling to settle down. Thus, patients should allow two to three weeks for time off work.

Will there be visible scarring after my facelift procedure?

Many patients are concerned about the visibility of scars after undergoing facelift surgery at our Sydney practice, which also serves Sutherland Shire, Kogarah, the South Coast. Good planning and attention to detail is undertaken to minimise the visibility of any potential scarring. Facelift scars are carefully created to be hidden in the hairline as well as behind the ear. There is usually little visible scarring following facelift surgery, which provides an excellent cosmetic result. Invariably, any facelifting technique will require an incision in front of the ear to some degree, but with meticulous surgical techniques and avoidance of tension around the scar line, a superb scar can be achieved in that area, which is very difficult to notice after it has healed satisfactorily. Makeup, of course, can be applied to these areas while scars are fading.

How long does a facelift last?

Following facelift surgery at our Sydney and Sutherland Shire -area practice, a patient is not frozen in time and any attempt to do so is fraught with danger. The idea of a facelift is to make a youthful and rejuvenated version of one’s self. If you had a facelift when you were 50 that made you look like 40, essentially you would look fantastic for the age of 50. However, the idea behind facelift surgery is not to still look 40 when you turn 80. A good facelift will reverse many of the stigmata of aging on a permanent basis.

What are the risks involved with facelift surgery?

A facelift is a surgical procedure and as such should be carried out by an expert surgeon under ideal surgical circumstances. As with any surgical procedure, there are inherent risks. A facelift is generally considered a very safe procedure with minimal risks and complications. However, a detailed discussion of the risks is always required by the surgeon. A facelift, as it only involves the skin and subcutaneous fat, is generally not a particularly painful procedure, which is why it is so amenable to being done as a day only procedure.
