When it comes to losing excess weight in specific areas of the body, sometimes diet and exercise alone are not enough. Changes in diet and exercise can help individuals lose some weight, but may still leave areas of unwanted fat. Liposuction is designed to contour the body and eliminate those areas of stubborn, excess fat so as to produce a more toned appearance. Dr. Darrell Perkins has been trained in the most advanced liposuction techniques, allowing him to provide patients from Sydney, Wollongong, and across New South Wales with safe, effective treatment.

The Liposuction Procedure

During liposuction, a small tube called a cannula is placed through tiny incisions in the treatment areas, which are usually four to five mm long. Localised fat deposits are broken up and sucked out using the cannula. This suction-assisted lipectomy technique can be applied to any part of the body where fat exists, although the most common areas targeted during the liposuction procedure at our practice include the outer thighs (saddlebags), hips, flanks, abdomen, inner thighs, knees, ankles, chin and neck, and breasts.

There are some factors that limit the liposuction procedure, including the quality of the skin and the deeper structures. Fat can only be suctioned from the layer between the deep muscles and bones and the overlying skin. Our bodies are not very good at reabsorbing skin, thus one limiting factor is the ability of the body’s skin to shrink down after fat deposits are removed through the liposuction process. People who are overweight and who lose large volumes do have problems with excess skin, resulting in similar results. After Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is a surgical procedure and should be done under sterile technique by an appropriately trained surgeon. It is an operation which can produce excellent results with minimal potential for risks and complications. Because of this, liposuction has a high satisfaction rate at our practice. Liposuction can often be performed as a day procedure; however, liposuction performed in large volumes may require an overnight stay in the hospital. Very limited liposuction procedures can be performed under sedation or pure local anaesthetic, although a light anaesthetic is usually far more pleasant for the patient.
