Breast Lift Surgery
Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, is an operation designed to lift the breasts into a more youthful position. Sagging of the breasts is caused by various factors. As a woman ages, her breasts tend to lose volume and thus sag. Childbirth and breastfeeding, as well as significant weight loss, can also have a significant impact on the shape of breasts. While sagging breasts have an aesthetic aspect that many patients wish to correct, there are also functional issues with having sagging breasts. Women may find that they must wear bras to lift the breasts into a more youthful position. This can cause strain on the back, shoulders, and neck similar to what women with large breasts suffer. Women may also be limited in the range or style of clothing they are able to wear. Dr. Darrell Perkins is an experienced Plastic Surgeon who provides exceptional breast lift surgery to patients from Sydney and all across New South Wales. He utilizes the most advanced techniques to produce the most natural-looking results.
The Breast Lift Procedure
No volume is actually removed from the breast during breast lift surgery at our practice and the skin and glandular tissue is rearranged to provide a more youthful and rejuvenated breast appearance.
If the addition of volume to the breast is also required, breast implants can be added at the time of the breast lift or during a later breast augmentation operation. In cases where the droopiness of the breast is of a mild or moderate degree, a prosthesis may be strategically employed to rejuvenate or give the appearance of a more youthful breast shape without the requirement for the scar associated with a lift. This clinical decision is usually made in cases where patients who have had children now experience empty, sagging breasts. In all cases, careful consideration must be given as to the particular circumstances of the patient and what appropriate solution is required in that circumstance. Dr. Perkins can help patients decide which breast lift options are best for them with a consultation at our practice. Please contact us today to schedule an initial consultation.
Recovery Following Breast Lift Surgery
Most breast lift operations can be done as day-only procedures. Patients can stay in hospital if they desire, but this is usually not necessary. In general terms, the breast tissue is not interfered with, although there may be some rearranging of glandular tissue to improve the shape of the breast during the procedure. As the operation usually involves only cuts of the skin, it is generally not a particularly painful operation.
Patients generally recover reasonably quickly, and unless they have some particularly physical occupation, would normally return to work within a week, and almost always within two weeks. Surgical drains may or may not be required after the procedure. If they are required, they are usually removed within a day or two following the breast lift operation.
Breast Lift Surgery Scars
Because incisions are required to perform the breast lift procedure, scars are inevitable. However, these scars generally fade very well and produce a high patient satisfaction. The extent of the scarring that is required is greatly dependent upon the degree of ptosis, or drooping, of the breasts. In general terms, the form and shape of the breast is far more important to the patient than the scars, which do tend to improve with time and in the majority of patients provide a very satisfactory cosmetic result.
The particular circumstances of the patient must be assessed during an initial consultation so the appropriate operation can be married to her particular circumstance. To schedule an initial breast lift consultation, please contact our practice in Sydney.
Breast Lift Surgery Complications
Breast lift surgery is a generally safe procedure with a very low risk profile. As with any operation, there can be problems with healing. However, this is very rare in a mastopexy. Most complications are of a very minor degree and should resolve quickly during the post-operative period. There will be some degree of bruising and swelling during the post-operative period, but this usually resolves in due course without specific requirements for treatment.
Mastopexy and Breast Cancer
In general circumstances, breast lift surgery does not interfere with the glandular breast tissue. As such, there should be no alteration in the ability to detect, diagnose or manage breast cancer. Under ordinary circumstances, as a matter of course, screening mammography should be performed as appropriate for a woman’s age and risk factors.
Breastfeeding after Breast Uplift
Since the glandular tissue is not generally interfered with during breast lift surgery and all of the glandular tissue remains attached to the nipple/areola, we generally expect that there will be no change in a woman’s ability to breastfeed following a breast lift operation at our practice.
Cost of Breast Lift Surgery
Under the Medicare scheme in Australia, there are very specific criteria that need to be satisfied to have Medicare item numbers applied to breast lift surgery. These involve the woman being within one to seven years following the birth of her last child, and with the nipple being below the level of her inframammary fold. Photographs do have to be supplied to Medicare to accompany a claim, and these photographs would be taken at the time of the initial breast lift consultation at our Sydney practice. If these criteria are met and the patient is in a Health Fund, a proportion of the cost will be borne by Medicare and the Health Fund.
If the patient is not in a Health Fund or does not meet these criteria then the costs for breast lift surgery will be more significant. A written estimate of fees of the total costs involved in the breast lift procedure is provided so the patient will be aware of all the out-of-pocket expenses.
