Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Eyelid reduction surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure offered at our Sydney practice that is designed to improve the contour of the eyelids. In this procedure, excess bags of fat and folds of skin are removed to give the eyes a more youthful and brighter appearance. Many patients with excess skin and fat around their eyes feel that they always look tired or have a “heavy” appearance in that area. These excesses of the eyelids can also lie on the eyelashes and restrict the vision of the patient. Many patients with this situation complain that their eyes get very heavy towards the end of the day, and they actually find it difficult to read or continue working. Fortunately, renowned Plastic Surgeon Darrell Perkins offers a variety of eyelid rejuvenation surgery techniques that can give patients from Sutherland Shire, Wollongong, and across New South Wales a brighter appearance.
The Blepharoplasty Procedure
During the blepharoplasty procedure at our Sydney practice, an incision is made in either the upper or lower eyelid. These usually heal with virtually invisible scars. Next, excess fat is removed and the eyelid skin is re-draped. This gives the eyes a much more smooth and youthful contour, brightens the face, and provides the patient with a rejuvenated and less tired appearance. Because the eyelid incisions essentially only involve skin and fat, the procedure is not very painful, making recovery quick. Some bruising and swelling can persist following eyelid surgery, and it may be a week or two before these have completely resolved.
Eyelid surgery is a day procedure at our New South Wales practice serving Sutherland Shire, Wollongong, and the South Coast. The procedure is quite commonly associated with other rejuvenation treatments such as a facelift. Upper eyelid surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthetic, although a general anaesthetic is usually preferred if the lower eyelids are being altered as well. In general, blepharoplasty is an excellent facial rejuvenation procedure as it gives reliably very nice results and a very natural rejuvenated appearance.
Eyelid Surgery Complications
The risk profile for a blepharoplasty performed at our Sydney practice is usually very good, and the risk to the vision or the eye is absolutely minimal. Other complications associated with eyelid surgery are discussed during the consultation at our Sutherland Shire and Wollongong-area practice. As with all cosmetic procedures, individual assessment of the patient is required to devise an operation which is optimal for their particular circumstance.
